Clay and Cement

Joyful Spirit Arts & Botanicals was born from my desire to follow my heart and do what I love. I am inspired to make things predominantly from clay and cement. My cement work imitates the look of the lava surrounding us here on the island of Hawaii but does not contain any lava or cinder. Therefore, it can be taken off of the island without actually removing lava. Most of my cement work has impressions of leaves from my yard that I embellish with metallic pigments, inspired by the rainbow of metallics found in lava. My clay work usually incorporated images of leaves or faces, speaking to the spirit of life in all things. I usually work with stoneware clay so my pieces are food worthy. However, I have been experimenting with Raku and Horsehair firings as well.
